We are unique in our commitment to quality and the finest durable pieces. As such, we provide an industry-leading 25 year warranty on each of our briefcases. Each case is handcrafted in the heart of Tuscany from the finest full grain, vegetable-tanned Italian leather. The craftsmanship is impeccable. With this, it is our responsibility to repair any manufacturing faults on zips, clasps, stitching or otherwise.

From the very beginning we have focused on sourcing the materials and skills necessary for such a guarantee. Our founder and CEO William Scott Forshaw has always been committed to providing the very best to his customer, searching tirelessly to source high-quality leather and knowledgeable artisans. As a result, our 25-year warranty is an honest reflection of our dedication to advocating craftsmanship and slow, sustainable fashion.

Please note that we do not cover any damage caused to an item by personal misuse or due to fair wear and tear over the natural life of your purchase. Our repair team though is still happy to mend the item for a fee if this is the case.

We source full grain western cowhides from the Santa Croce sull’Arno region of Tuscany. Crucially, this is a world-renowned area for producing high-quality leather that stands the test of time. Full grain leather is made from the strongest part of the hide, the furthest away from the flesh. It is considered the most desirable type of leather as the close grain pattern is both durable and attractive. It also maintains the natural markings of the cow which ensures authenticity and timeless style.

Then, our leather is vegetable-tanned. This is a process which has been passed down the generations. It is still a way of life for many in Tuscany. Therefore, as members of The Genuine Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather Consortium, this is another way in which we honour traditional craftsmanship. In essence it is a natural process, with dyes extracted from bark extracts including chestnut, quebracho and mimosa trees, that results in a rich, warm finish. It is environmentally friendly as well, as no toxic chemicals are used to dye or seal the leather. This allows the leather to develop a unique patina over time. This highly desirable sheen is cultivated through use and exposure, with patina a hallmark of the highest-quality leather.

Our full grain leather is available in three different finishes: Classico, Croco and Soft Grain.

Classico is our signature leather, ideal for the gentleman with traditional taste.

Croco means our faux crocodile finish. Here, our classic full grain leather is heat-embossed to reveal a mock croc print. It is a unique twist for the gentleman with a individual style.

Soft Grain is our most modern option. This butter-soft leather has a matte finish which makes it perfect for the gentleman who desires more relaxed look.

Our family-run factory is based in Tuscany - the epicentre of the traditional leather industry. With this distinct heritage, our factory continually strives for the very best. After all, our skilled artisans possess a wealth of knowledge and experience. Indeed Domenico, the head of the family, has been involved in the leather industry for nearly 75 five years. Understandably then, our 25 year warranty is a testament to their skill.
We understand that a quality leather briefcase is one of the most important investments that you will make. As such, we design briefcases which blend a timeless look with modern functionality. Our collection includes a range of styles to meet your specific needs. For example, if you need to carry a laptop to and from work, the Volterra laptop briefcase has a padded compartment with straps to secure a laptop, whereas the Alanzo features external umbrella straps.

Within these many styles the most versatile is perhaps the Micheli backpack briefcase which boasts adjustable straps so that the briefcase can be worn on your back whilst cycling or by your side. In fact, the majority of our briefcases are also accompanied by a detachable, adjustable shoulder strap to easily support the weight of your bag.

This focus on practicality is evident through the evolution of the Paolo 3-section classic briefcase. It was the first product that our founder and CEO William designed. Now over a decade ago, he has since then refined the design in order to fulfil the needs of the modern businessman. Though, he has continued with the same leather and production methods - these have always been the very best. This demonstrates our primary philosophy: to always provide the most practical design that maintains a classic British aesthetic.

With our belief that the right briefcase can last you your entire career, it is imperative that you choose the perfect briefcase for you. There are four key elements to consider.

1. Size

Firstly, it is important to think about the amount that you will need to transport to and from the office on a daily basis. This way you will be able to choose between large briefcases such as the 3-sectioned Tomacelli which can accommodate a 17” laptop, A4 files and an iPad/tablet or a slimmer design. The Lorenzo in comparison has a single compartment for a slimline 13" laptop and thin notebook. Simply, it is a case of what will suit you best day after day.

2. Function

Next, finding your ideal briefcase depends on the function you require it to perform. If you need to transport a laptop then it is necessary to choose a briefcase with a protective padded laptop sleeve. Otherwise, a briefcase such as the 2-section Tomacelli can accommodate larger files or the Varese with wheels is designed for the frequent flyer.

3. Style

The style of briefcase that you choose should also depend on your working environment. A formal workplace requires a traditional briefcase like the classic Buroni attaché case, whilst a leather business satchel such as the Ravenna will suit a more relaxed office.

Likewise, the leather colour is crucial here. Dark chocolate brown and chestnut tan leathers complement navy suits whereas black matches grey and, of course, looks smart with a traditional black suit.

4. Profession

For a specialised profession, a more specific briefcase may be required. For example for a lawyer, the Basilio executive briefcase is ideal for transporting documents to meetings. Likewise, a doctor may prefer the Donnini Large leather medical bag.

Maxwell-Scott was founded by William Scott Forshaw in 2002 as an antidote to the prevalent fast fashion culture. His focus was to create briefcases to last an entire career that combined Italian artistry with timeless British design.

William searched tirelessly for the right factory, finally settling on a family-run factory in Tuscany. Here, in Italy’s traditional leather industry, the Maxwell-Scott artisans now handcraft each briefcase. Their workmanship is a testament to the decades of knowledge passed down through families. In fact, each briefcase has a 25 year guarantee. This is both a tribute to slow consumerism and follows William’s desire to create pieces which can be passed down from generation to generation.

Over the years we have formed deep connections with our customers, continually striving to provide the best in terms of purchase and customer service. Ultimately, the primary aim at Maxwell-Scott is to serve the customer and uphold the heritage of the Italian leather industry.
